Marine Corps. Staff Sergeant Eric Alva served from 1990 to 2003. He became the first US military member to be injured in the Iraq occupation when his left arm and left leg were broken and his right leg was amputated after stepping on a land mine. After this accident, SSgt Alva received a Purple Heart and a medical discharge. He now works for the Human Rights Campaign to remove the ban against gays in the military.
